What is Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a traditional healing practice that’s been around for thousands of years. Throughout history, various cupping techniques and styles have been found all over the world from Ancient Egypt, China, Tibet, Latin America as well as Europe.

Cupping is a practice in which special cups are placed on the skin to create suction. This causes the tissue beneath the cup to be drawn up and swell, causing an increase in blood flow to the affected area. Enhanced blood flow under the cups draws impurities and toxins away from nearby tissues and organs towards the surface for elimination.

What to expect

Cupping sessions can be done on its own, usually targeting a particular area of the body, which is a short 30 to 45 min session or as a combination with other massage techniques during a full body treatment. There are 3 main cupping techniques which will be used during a session.

Static cupping - where desired number of cups are placed on desired spots on the body and left there for several minutes ( between 3 to 15 min depending on situation). It is this technique which leaves the darkest bruise like marks on your skin, which are not painful, and disappear in about 3 to 5 days after the session.

Dynamic cupping - it is continuous placement of 2 or 4 cups, where cups are placed only for a few seconds, constantly moving along the targeted area, one at the time like a game of checkers.

Moving cupping - this is done by sliding one cup along targeted areas without leaving the cup stationary in one place.

All these techniques overlap and are used according to a particular situation . Generally all techniques are painless and actually quite relaxing, though some people might experience little discomfort when cupping for the first time or when they have extra body fat or some sensitive areas. Overall cupping is a very gentle and relaxing method with huge healing potential and it's also quite safe to use unless someone has serious health conditions which would be contraindicated .
