Post Surgery Lymphatic drainage (MLD) Newtownards

Post-operative lymphatic drainage, often referred to as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), is a specialized medical massage technique recommended by surgeons to support the body’s natural healing process after surgery. By using gentle, strokes to stimulate the lymphatic system. This therapy helps clear metabolic waste and excess fluid that commonly accumulate after invasive procedures. These could be

  • Cosmetic Surgery: Liposuction, tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift), facelifts, and breast augmentations( implants) or breast reduction.

  • Medical Procedures: Mastectomies (especially when lymph nodes are removed), joint replacements, orthopaedic surgeries, C sections  or any surgeries that

  • Reduces Swelling (Edema): Surgery disrupts natural lymphatic pathways, causing fluid to pool in the tissues. MLD facilitates the removal of this excess fluid, visibly decreasing post-operative swelling.

  • Accelerates Healing Time: By improving both lymphatic and blood circulation, MLD delivers essential oxygen and nutrients to the surgical site, which can reduce overall recovery time by 50% to 70%.

  • Prevents Fibrosis and Seromas: This therapy reduces the risk of fibrosis (hardened, lumpy scar tissue) and seromas (fluid pockets) by preventing the buildup of proteins and cellular debris that can solidify under the skin.

  • Minimises Bruising: Rhythmic stimulation helps the body break down trapped blood from damaged capillaries, allowing bruises to fade days or weeks faster than they would on their own.

  • Alleviates Pain and Tension: As swelling decreases, pressure on surrounding nerve endings is reduced, providing significant relief from post-surgical discomfort.

  • Boosts Immune Function: A healthy lymphatic flow effectively clears away bacteria and toxins, supporting the immune system during a time when the body is most vulnerable to infection.

  • Improves Aesthetic Results: Especially after cosmetic procedures like liposuction or a tummy tuck, MLD ensures the skin heals evenly, leading to smoother contours and more natural-looking results.

When to start your MLD treatments

Usually 2 or 3 days after most procedures such as liposuction, though some surgeons might recommend waiting 1-2 weeks for more invasive surgeries or until incisions have fully closed.

How often should you get MLD sessions

This depends on number of factors such as type of surgery, level of swelling, etc. Most common frequency begins with 2-3 sessions per week for the first 1-2 weeks, then gradually decreasing as swelling goes down. Though, I always show my clients how to perform basic drainage them selfs, and recommending they do it daily at home to achieve the best results and speed up the healing process.
